Course overview

This course is designed to create fully-fledged industry standard hair and make-up artists, exploring various specialities within creative industries. We convey the importance of an artistry, honing in on developing a broad range of skills, confidence and experience. The course explores various avenues from effective visual communication tools, collaborative and reflective practice to the basic disciplines needed within the hair and make-up artistry.

The course has been specifically designed with key industry opinions and sectors in mind and will broaden your knowledge, portfolio and overall understanding on how to develop your idea into a fully realised and developed design concept. You will benefit from the tutor’s specialist knowledge of industry, connections and insider tips and tricks to get yourself successfully initiated into a thriving industry of creatives. We explore, develop and enjoy the process of hair and make-up application, with you finishing the course with an industry standard portfolio and a breadth of knowledge.

Level 4:

During the first year of the course (Level 4) the course is designed to cover the fundamental skills you will need working as a make-up and hair artist, within the fashion, media and performance industries. Practical workshops and design projects are embedded throughout, providing you the opportunity to extend existing skills and build your knowledge in make-up and hair design for print, screen and theatre. Theory sessions aim to build theoretical knowledge on different time periods and cultural movements, this will help to strengthen your design skills as an artist. Employability and personal skills are developed throughout all modules, through practical applications on each other, models and actors, during work placement opportunities. Modules will include the delivery of design briefs which have heavy links to industry, with the aims of you developing an industry standard portfolio of work and a sketchbook of trial and errors to show your development of ideas and practical skills.

Level 5:

The course will enable you to develop the skills learnt at Level 4 further and provides the opportunity to begin to consider areas of the industry and your chosen specialism. Modules are aimed at developing your communication, teamwork and employability, by providing work placements within industry and freedom to networking with other creatives and collaborate on projects. You will develop your contextual thinking, critical analysis, research and reflective skills, as this is an essential skills as a make-up artist and an important part of the course.

Learning is face to face.

  • You must have achieved 48 UCAS tariff points from an appropriate Level 3 (NVQ 3, BTEC Award or A Level)
  • We would also consider students with a level 3 in a course which is relevant to the industry:
  • Art and Design, Hair dressing, Costume Design, Film and Media, Graphic Design, Theatre Performance
  • GCSE passes at grade 4 (C) or equivalent English and maths.
  • A portfolio of work (if applicable)

You will be assessed throughout the course within all practical and theory lessons and workshops. All modules will be assessed through a varied of different methods, including blogs, reflective practice, practical assessment, live briefs, essays, reports, presentations and sketchbooks.

Once you have completed the FD in Specialist Hair and Make-up Artistry for Creative industries, you will have the skills needed to enter the industries in the field of fashion, film/television and theatre, as a make-up artist, hair stylist, wig technician and special effects artist.

You may also choose to continue your studies and advance your professional development and skills further on our BA (Top Up) Specialist Hair and Make-up Artistry for Creative Industries.

Fees payable directly to Middlesbrough College: £6,900 per year.

A makeup kit will be provided to you by the college and fully paid for. The value of which is £650 and contained a range of industry standard makeup brand including, Ben Nye, Mehron, Danessa Myricks, MAC Cosmetics, Plouise and more.

Work placement on the course is encouraged from the first week onwards. We have many modules including ‘Collaborative Practice and Working Effectively’ within Level 4 and ‘Hair and Make-up for Theatrical Performance’ within Level 5 which both provide students with the opportunity to network with local businesses and immerse yourself into the life of a make-up artist back stage working within a active theatre production.

Many industry professionals are brought in to carry out live briefs and interactive workshops with the students, to provide additional opportunities for collaboration and outside industry knowledge.
