As I've learned through competing in the Rebelle Rally, paper maps still play an important role in our world, and it's a great life skill to understand topographical maps. For this week's article at Popular Science, I wrote about onXmaps, Inc., an app that's bridging the distance between topo maps and digital wayfinding and the scientists behind it all. Writing about people and the amazing things they do is always a privilege. For this one, I got to interview Walter LaPlante to talk about the Henry Ford Technology Award he earned for a very cool invention. He came up with MAIVS, short for Mobile AI Vision System, which uses tiny cameras and artificial intelligence to spot manufacturing defects in real time on the assembly line.Check it out here at Popular Science:https://lnkd.in/gCYu4eQF

Solid state batteries are still an emerging technology in the automotive world, but JBL Professional has it figured out for the new Toyota Tacoma's audio system. Both integrated into the dash and into the sound system for the Tacoma, the Bluetooth portable speaker can be daisy-chained to up to 100 others for a giant party. Toyota's SUVs and trucks are getting a lot of press lately, but how about that new ninth-generation Camry? I talked to chief engineer Mark DeJongh to get the details on the improvements the team made to the brakes, suspension, and noise & vibration for my latest at Popular Science: https://lnkd.in/gGwgYWAW#toyota #newcars #cars Toyota North America

Toyota North America invited me to the NASCAR race at Circuit of The Americas last month, and I got to bring my parents for their first NASCAR event. They (and I!) had a blast. And did you know the racecars are high-performance versions of the humble Camry XSE sedan? https://lnkd.in/gNmZ_6_e

I love what the Make-A-Wish America organization does for seriously ill children and their parents. For one 9-year-old boy, a motorcade took him to a meetup with his idol Jayson Tatum of the Celtics for an epic day. (Check out my wrapup at ) https://lnkd.in/gNs6Cq_H
