I see too much people asking for what is the chronology of the franchise. And I see too much people being misled after they asked. So this is the real Certain Anime Timeline

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun - 2009 + OVA from 2010
Toaru Majutsu no Index - 2008 (The beginning of Index is supposed to be around the 14th episode of Railgun.)
Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S - 2013 (Is the same Sisters Arc from Index and is starting in parallels of Index episode 10 when Railgun S is reaching episode 9.)
Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator - 2019 (Starting right after Index S1.)
Toaru Majutsu no Index II - 2010
Toaru Majutsu no Index : Endymion no Kiseki - 2013 (Takes place right after Index II episode 7.)
Toaru Kagaku no Railgun T - 2020 (Same as Railgun S it has an arc which is a Index parallel arc. It is the same Daihasei Festival Arc from Index II episode 8 to 13.
Toaru Majutsu no Index III - 2018 (Read the novel)

The Official Toaru Anime Timeline. (2)

This is mostly a post to help people for understanding when the events take place. Not a guide to see the franchise in a chronological way.
I still highly recommend to watch in release order.

I hope this forum post helped some people
Don't hesitate to tell me if I forgot something, I will edit it.

To be honest, the timeline isn't even that confusing. The only problem with it is that the side stories (for example Railgun) are miles better than Index, and due to Index being the main plotline, the side stories do not actually make the overall timeline move anywhere.

This makes the franchise very frustrating at times because the anime adaptation of Index is sometimes too painful to watch, and sadly in order to understand the side stories (Accelerator or Railgun S), you have to watch the mediocre stuff first (aka Index).

I'm not saying Index is trash or anything (considering the ratings I personally gave them), however, it does have a slightly negative effect on the Railgun anime. I mean, it kinda sucks that Railgun is labelled as a 'side story'...

For me it just suck that the Index anime is not good as it is supposed to be.
It is actually a shame we have to deal with the myth of "Railgun>Index" because the source material has NOTHING to envy of the Railgun one. :(

Dude, the reason why Railgun anime is better than Index is the manga. Railgun's source material is manga and Index's source material is light novel. Light novel is harder to adapt into anime, and Index's director is really bad.
Btw Index is one of the best selling LN in Japan.

Is just a timeline thread and yet we have to argue fucking Index vs Railgun vs Accelerator type shit along with defending the anime because you prefer the source instead of just defending the actual anime

Just fucking please guys
The Official Toaru Anime Timeline. (7)

@Tsumilk do you think it would be possible to include the timeline of the unadapted material for Index, Railgun and Accelerator?
Like how Saten meets Frenda before she dies and where that lines up in the continuity of the franchise?

Ow I am aware of this. I think Index is like the 4th best selling LN of all time in Japan (something like that). However, the argument that 'Light novel is harder to adapt into anime' is somewhat flawed, considering anime such as Overlord, Toradora, the Monogatari Series, Re:Zero and other animes were adapted from light novels too, and they turned out to be really good. Also, saying that 'the reason why Railgun anime is better than Index is the manga' is a bit strange, considering that Index also has a manga. I mean I'm not sure if it's any good, but it still has a manga nevertheless.

I mentioned that the Index's director is bad, he literally skipped most of the important event and adapted the fanserves scene in Index III.
The LN you have mentioned are adapted by other studio than JC staff. Only Toradora is made by JC staff but the director of it is Nagai (who is the director of Railgun).

If people care so much to watch all of Toaru they should just go with release order but PAY ATTENTION to the events.

It isnt hard to keep up where anything happens(Well except from the fact that Railgun s1 fucked up the timeline with its fillers but anyway.). Index doesnt reference Railgun and Railgun doesnt use Index's arcs, except the Sisters arc.

Trying so hard to keep track of the chronological order when you have conflicting eps and one arc that is the same is asinine.

Not anymore sadly. It used to sell like hotcakes back in 2011-2014 when the Othinus arc was going and Index II just finished but because of the very long anime absent and the unwanted heavy object, the sales came crashing down hard and nowadays it barely sales 1/5 of what it used to back in early NT.

Why are people arguing about this? Who cares if the director for Index is a moron, or that Railgun is a manga, the fact of the matter is Railgun is better than Index (anime wise). Why defend the fact that Index is shit in comparison to the side story that is Railgun? It's like you people want mediocrity.

Oh yes, sadly. Othinus arc is the best arc after all. I think it's because of Kamisato arc, too many people found it to be boring, and it was too long.

To be honest I think index is best expireneced chronologically. It makes it so much fun to watch and also just makes things easier to digest because of things like AIM diffusion fields witch in the anime of index isnt brought up till arc 6 but in railgun its arc 1 so when you get to arc 6 you already have a good understanding of the concept so you ask less questions. The index anime which i do like skips stuff or summerizes stuff from the light novel consistently a=wich leads to the plot feeling a little too fast so being introduced to conceots multiple times make things feel more whole.

One thing I've read is that, the higher ups didn't grant enough episodes for the director to adapt the LN. Hence Index III was a mess. I'm only a few episodes in and started to notice a bit of the mess indeed. It's like making movies, there are tons of times where the directors clash with the studios due to creative differences. They either end up leaving the studio, or gone with what they said and ended up mess the whole thing. So sounds like that's what happened to Index III.

OT: This timeline is straightforward enough. But in terms of anime adaptations, wish there will be a re-air in the far future so all the Index/Railgun/Accerator episodes are aired in chronological order with new scenes for clarity (especially for Index) and improved animation.

It's hard to explain, but you could say the parts that explain how the enemy's power/magic works, and the reason behind the characters actions (For example, I'm pretty sure anime-only didn't understand what's happening in that arc and why the characters doing this and that) and cutting the MC monologue, making Touma look like a bland MC (I gotta mention that all the LN adaptations cut the monologue so Index isn't the only victim).

And about the LN, the material of Index III are volumes OT13-OT22. if you wonder what does OT means, it's the short of Old Testment, which is the first part of the LN (there are currently 3 parts of the LN: OT, NT, GT), and the three seasons of Index anime have covered them all.

I already forgot the plot of past series so I guess the confusion is not that deep. But it also make the story less interesting since I can't relate some event with past plotline
