How do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? The obvious answer for a lot of people is to wear green! (Accessories, and all!) Others get a bit more creative, serving up nothing but delicious green food at their St. Patrick's Day parties. Whatever your St. Patrick's Day traditions are, we're sure you could also do with some good ol' Irish cinema! There are plenty of Irish movies that talk about the history of the holiday, but also some that are just fun to watch in general. So, we rounded up a bunch that we think you should have on your radar.
If you're a fan of movies based on true stories, you'll be happy to know that there are plenty of those sprinkled throughout. (You'll love My Left Foot if that's what you're into.) There are also some great romantic movies for those who live vicariously through fictional characters. You'll want to stream Ondine and Brooklyn immediately if that's you! While some of these flicks may not have been filmed in Ireland specifically, they still scream St. Paddy's with their fun plots.
You can set the St. Patrick's Day mood even more by pairing your viewing with some traditional Irish foods or perhaps an Irish coffee. You'll be feeling lucky in no time!
When Fiona moves in with her grandparents on the West Coast of Ireland, she doesn't really know what to expect. All she knows is that she has a strange family history, and that her grandparents live near Roan Inish, an island long-rumored to have selkies (a half human and half fish creature) roaming about. Could one of these legendary figures be her long-lost brother?
We'll never be able to resist a good biopic! With Song of Granite, we see the story of Joe Heaney, a traditional Irish singer in the mid-1900s, who had to overcome his shy tendencies when pursuing his successful musical career.

A young Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise play an immigrant couple from Ireland who find themselves in Boston in the late 1800s. The problem is, they were meant to head over to Oklahoma! Because of this, the two face many struggles, both financially and socially, and must figure out a way to survive.
Mike Clarke is a fighter pilot in the 1940s who makes a pretty silly bet with the nephew of mobster Al Capone. He loses, seeing him stranded in a remote Irish village. He thinks he is doomed, but he eventually meets a woman named Maggie, who completely changes the trajectory of his life.
Hillary Swank gives a stellar performance in this romantic comedy which sees her star as a young gal who ponders the life she had with her late husband. The film takes place in Ireland, where her character finds a series of letters that her husband wrote before he passed on.
